What Is A Podcast? Why Do I Need One?

Today, I will answer the question, "What is a Podcast?"
First, a podcast is a modern form of blogging. When blogging was introduced, it transformed the way information could be delivered to the masses. Instead of writers submitting countless articles to countless magazines, etc. in trying to get their articles published, blogging was created.
With the expansion of the internet, bloggers soon found they could bypass the corporate world of magazines and interact with their intended audiences directly. Some bloggers even monetized their content and created an entirely new career, without even trying to enter the magazine publishing world.
Podcasting is the audio version of blogging!
Just like blogging allowed anyone with a computer to become a reporter, podcasting allows anyone with a computer to become a talk show host or online radio personality.

The main difference between online radio and podcasting is the ability of a Podcast to generate subscribers. I had an online radio station that had thousands of listeners in over 160 nations. We were rated #1 in the world on several occasions by Shoutcast.com. But I could not ever contact any of them. I could not capture their emails nor offer them the ability to subscribe to new programming. I was at their mercy to keep coming back for more content.
Podcasting changes that dynamic. Through podcasting, you can offer a subscription alternative. You can offer free items in exchange for your listener's email address. You can grow your own, personal audience that only wants to hear from you!

Podcasting Tutorial - Video 2: My Top 10 Recording Tips

Is Podcasting Difficult to Do?

Today, I will answer the question, "Is It Difficult to Do?"
The quick answer is "No." But there are some things that you need to pay attention to in order to produce a quality product. If you do not have a quality podcast in this day and time, your listeners will probably only end up being your family and close friends. If you want to expand your reach, you should invest in a few pieces of equipment that will improve your quality.
Now, if you are doing a video podcast, you definitely will need a camera. If you are going to use your laptop, you probably have a camera built-in. If you are using a desktop computer, you can purchase a cheap camera that will sit on top of the monitor. The other option is to purchase an actual video camera, but this could also be the most expensive option.
For an audio podcast, you can use the microphone built into the computer itself. But it will also sound like you are using the microphone built into the computer. For just a small investment, you can purchase a headset and microphone combination. This will improve the sound quality and help you to stand out from those who just want to use their cell phone or computer microphone.
For a bit more, you can purchase a little better Condenser microphone, such as a Blue Yeti or Blue Snowball. These work well as long as you stay close to the microphone. I have used a Blue Yeti, and you can see it here!
If you truly want to go all out and get to the professional sounding quality, you can purchase a Dynamic Microphone. This style of the microphone only picks up sounds that are directly in front of it. It's the type you see in pictures of radio stations where the DJ is speaking directly into the mic. The condenser mics pick up sounds from AROUND the microphone... basically, the room. Which is why it sounds "funny" unless you are directly in front of the microphone like I am right now.
So, there you have a list of some of the equipment you will need. In the next article, I will answer the question, "Is it complicated?"

How To Launch a Podcast in 11 Steps (For Beginners)

5 Benefits Of Podcasting Vs. Blogging

When setting up a website or new business, many entrepreneurs instantly think about creating a blog through which they can promote new products and services. However, blogging isn't necessarily the best way to do it, although having a blog is an important aspect of any website.
Here are the benefits of using podcasting to reach out to your visitors.

1. It's Personal and Real
One of the reasons why podcasts can be more effective than blog posts is because they seem that little bit more real. Videos and audio recordings as opposite to text written on a screen often appeals to many people, and it's also easier for people to put on a video while they're cooking or doing something else. Watching somebody talk in a video or listening to somebody's voice in an audio recording can be more effective since you can convey more emotions, such as tone of voice or facial expressions.
2. It's Convenient For People
Your listeners don't have to be online at the time you post the podcast - they can watch it later and catch up. This makes it convenient for both you and the listeners since you can create and post content whenever you like and they can listen or watch the podcast whenever they are free.
3. It's Easy To Do
There's nothing complicated about making a podcast. All it involves is a camera or smartphone to record it on and a connection to upload it to the internet and post it on your website. You can make videos no matter where you are in the world, and as long as you have a Wifi connection, it can be uploaded instantly.
4. It's Simpler Than a Blog Post
Making a video or recording for your podcast series can be easier than creating a blog post since you don't have to worry as much about making spelling mistakes. Since you're talking rather than writing, you can say more in a shorter space of time and worry less about whether you've spelled something incorrectly or missed a comma here and there.
5. Videos Are More Appealing on Social Media
If there's a link to an article and a link to a video, more people will be attracted to the video than the article post. This is because videos are more visually appealing to most social media users, which means that your website will get more clicks, visits, and interest.
A podcast provides on-demand and targeted content that your audience is looking for. It's free for your audience, they can listen to it on the go and allows you to connect with your audience much better than text-based media. How To Create a Podcast For Your Business

Recording a podcast will connect you in a new way with your audience. They'll really get to know you and start to look forward to your shows. It's an effective way to create content in a new way that will get interested in your current audience and new members alike as you add value to their lives.
Come Up with a Theme and Main Purpose
When you decide to start a podcast, you want to come up with a theme for your podcast plus understand what the main purpose is for your podcast. Try to write down as many show ideas as possible.
Get the Right Equipment
You don't have to buy the top of the line equipment, but you do want to ensure that you sound good. You'll need a good quality microphone, your computer (a laptop or PC is fine), and some editing software like Audacity that will allow you to perfect your show. Plus, you'll need to be able to ensure that your show is encoded properly in the right format. Finally, you'll need a place to host your podcast like Amazon S3 servers, or you can use a service like BlogTalkRadio.com.
Plan Out Your Shows
You'll want to write an outline for your shows. The best shows keep a similar format for every show. Plus, if you have segments on your show, it's easier to plan the content. For example, you may have time set aside for opening monologue, music, various topics, commercial breaks, closing remarks, and your outro.
Set Up Your Shows for the Next Quarter at a Minimum
You'll want to schedule your show themes in advance so that you can invite the right guests on the show. Plus, knowing what the show is about in advance helps you develop the right content, find sponsors, and know what products you want to promote.
Market Your Show
Once you have everything set up and know your launch date, work on getting at least three shows completed for marketing purposes. Start marketing at least six weeks before your launch date so that you can get a good audience for the first three shows. This is going to ensure that your show gets started with good fans.
Have Fun
An important thing to remember about doing a podcast is that your happiness (or not) shows through in your voice. To help, try looking in a mirror when you talk so that you can keep your voice and personality light when appropriate. Have show notes in front of you so you don't have to memorize anything, and just talk and be yourself.
